Laura Mulvey
Laura Mulvey was a feminist who covered the fields of the film industry. She came up with a persuasive theory about why music videos are produced. She believed that music videos were made for satisfaction for the female and male gender. Although she believed the music video that contained women who wore more revealing clothing were for the male gender. She explained that it had representation of women which oppresses them. She called it the 'Male gaze' ; the whole of the gaze was to show how the audience looked at the artist or context within it. Mulvey's main concept was how men looked at women in music videos and how it draws them into viewing their music videos due to certain type of features on the woman's body. A technique used by directors to establish this 'male gaze' is called dismembering: this is where the camera focuses on a part of the female/male body, mainly female to give it that attracting look. An exmaple of this of which supports Mulveys Theory is this video:
This music video is by kanye west and jamie foxx - Gold digger. it shows women who are under dressed and the camera focusing on the woman's body parts.
