Research; Example music video

This song is not my favourite but its the only one that would prove my point about the functions of a music video. The music video has a story to it which goes with the lyrics of the song - although there are random bits with in the music video like the people in bear costumes... But that adds to the "entertainment" that is presented. Music video directors add elements of humour in to their videos so that it encourages people to watch their music videos even more to gain entertainment. This then increases how many views the video gets, thus increasing how much popularity they gain.

If I were to compare this video to a more serious one by the same artist, it will not have as much views;

 The less serious music video got even more views rather than the more serious one. The song may be good but people come to watch the video for one thing; to be entertained in any way, and it seems like most people like to be humoured by music videos.

Summary of Andrew Goodwins Theory

Goodwin had a very interesting theory where he believed every music video presented. These either had an illustration, Amplification or Disjunction.

illustration- The actual video telling the story of the lyrics.

Amplification - Introduction of new meaning to lyrics that does not contradict lyrics but adds layer.

Disjunction - Has little connections between the lyrics or the video.

The Functions of a Music Video

There are a few reason on why a music video is made; the main idea for why a music video is produced is for either promotinal or artistic purposes. The use of having a music video is to show the audience an imagery to correspond with the actual audio it self. When a music video is made it also creates awareness to the audience a great examaple of that is when record labels look to sign an artist they look through artist music videos to try get a clear picture on what the artist is trying to put across. The main reasons for it is to either promote their music or to portray a message through their music.

Research; functions of a music video

Personally, I think that due to the increasing popularity of technology, everyone (particularly amongst young people) are more visual rather than just listening to it, like they did when they listened to radio before technology evolved. So nowadays, people need a music video to understand and 'feel' the music video, otherwise they feel lost and get confused, which brings me to my first point; there must be a concept that follows the lyrics (illustration). Without this listeners will feel confused as to what they are listening to and not enjoy the music as much.

Another function of a music video is that it promotes the music; for example, a music video is shown on a music channel, a person likes the music and video, the person then researches the artist to discover more of their music. Artists choose singles from the album, which will be kind of the 'main' song of their album. They will produce a music video for it, promote it via posters, social networking sites, etc. thus gaining more popularity.

Reflecting back on the AS year; Technical skills developed

At the end of the AS course, I believe I have successfully learnt most valuable skills that are used in the media process. These which included;

  • planning and organising for your media product to ensure easy and flow when you are recording/editing your media product (storyboarding/moodboards)
  • using the camera properly (even though I missed that lesson)
  • using Final Cut Pro to edit our products
  • converting videos so that they can be seen on the blogs
  • using different means of technology to present evaluation, pictures and text (Photobucket, Vimeo, etc.)
  • how to use the sound editing program effectively
I would like to think that media helped me build my confidence up and to work in a team effectively and efficiently, even with minor setbacks. All these skills will progress to help me during my A2 course, as it requires more editing technical skill rather than camera skill. I am looking forward to be doing individual work as personally, I think I work better as independently. Having said that, I like helping people in my group to ensure that they attain the grade they want.

Reflecting back on the AS year; Practice

For some reason, our music video could not be put up, but we were told to analyse it anyway and how we felt doing it. I had a problem first when as the first group I was initially with, they were not in and so I was assigned to another group, which made me rethink the whole video structure and content. But it was still fun and good nevertheless.
My first song was Cha Cha Cha Slide, but my new group had Amarillo so we proceeded with that. As it was such short notice, I had to be in the music video along with another group member and some acquaintances. I was really nervous at first because I had never acted on camera before but my group made me feel comfortable and we all had fun doing so.
We took multiple shots of the same thing; me and three people enthusiastically walking towards the camera, then in the next shot three other people. We only had to do one minute of the song so we didn't need a variety of shots.
Whilst we were editing it, I felt really confused because there were so many shots and I was quite new to the program. But my group member who was editing taught me the basics and he went through what he was doing so I knew the process.
Overall it was really fun, enjoyable activity which is making me quite anxious and excited for our new project with my new group.

Lipsynching Task

My first task in our first media lesson was to familiarise ourselves with the software we will be using for next three months; Final Cut Pro. Our task was to make a music video, with given shots from a previous students work.

At first it was very daunting; We had a range of 8-12 shots, which we could use - Some were, what I like to call, red herrings, where it was just a random shot. From the tutorial Micky showed us in class, we were told to put all the base tracks together, and mark when we heard the the first lyrics, on all the tracks. This showed us when to put all the rest of the tracks. We then had to cut in and out of the shots, to create our final piece.
