advertisement 3- Rita Ora

This advertisement is from Rita Oras digipak which shows what we will expect from the album and how she will be portrayed. i couldn't really find an advertisement for her album but her name on the  advertisement/digipak appears to be bright bold and red like her showing she is a fiery character. Over all i have chosen artists that link to mine as they are all bubbly, diva like and have a bold personality portrayed through out.

advertisement 2- katy perry

This advertisement is for Katy Perry's album  i kissed a girl and uses all of the conventions such as the image of the digipak and the big bold picture of her so audiences can see the artist and its similar to what she wears in her music videos and album as it represents her playful character. shows important information such as the release date and the hit song so people remember that this song that they keep hearing on radio is that song and was sang by katy perry.

Advertisement 1- marina and the diamonds

This advertisement is for the album by marina and the diamonds and this links to our music video genre as we  chose to remake her music video. The use of conventions here is ok as we have the artist on the front and her name as the way it was labelled in the album and we have detail as to when the album will be out to stores and new songs that will feature on the album. It gives detailed information like most advertisements for digipaks. It also gives a review from an well known magazine so it attracts the audience and the fact that its bright and appealing will attract the audience and also sets out the website where people can visit to look up the artist. Although there is no picture of the artists album which is a let down because everyone wants to know what the artists album looks like so that when they go to the shops they can pick it up straight away.
This links to my own advertisement and digipak because we used this artists songs and made it our own and my advertisement will look a little like this with the artist in the front but i will have an example of the cd in front and labels and a QR code so people can scan them on there phones to find out more as technology has advanced.

Ancillary; Do's and Don'ts of Ancillary

digipak 3

The Weeknd

This digipak is from the album weeknd. i would say this digipak stands out quite a bit as its different from most albums as the pictures on the front cover describe the album almost in just a picture and it quickly tells the audience what they will expect if they listen to the songs. The use of text is bold and clear and stands out and the songs of the album are at the top of the front cover. This digipak style is very modern retro and appealing, i would say it would appeal more to the younger audience ie teens and the artist is sort of new but because of his fan bases he is well known.

Digipak 2

 Eliza Doolittle

This digipak is from Eliza Doolittles album and from looking at the album you can tell that album will contain songs that are quirky, up beat, fun and happy and shes a diva like singer. The album is bright bold and stands out which is good because it catches the audiences eye and looks very appealing as its very retro and modern. It also follows the conventions of having 3-4 colours as this album has blue, pink, purple and black it also uses big fonts which are fun and modern and the cd i would say mostly appeals to teens and adults who are in there mid 20's. The artist is at the front and she stands out and her clothing speaks for the type of character she is. What i like about this digipak is how the songs on the album are layed out its like a graffiti text. it looks playful and fun and i like how she is presented on the digipak as she dresses exactly like this in the videos and also moves and acts like this. this digipak relates to my digipak because out artist also has to look playful in her pictures and the text also has to look playful too and bold.

Digipak Mock Up

This is the mock up i made for my digipak i am going to put on the picture of the inside when i take a picture of it

Analysis of Digipak ; Britney Spears

This is one of britney spears digipak, the first things thats stand out about this digipak is the image of her. Its a shot of her face which makes her self stand out. The use of the white is really effective which helps the consumers notice the digipak when they are looking to purchase albums. The font may be hard to read however as britney spears is a well known artist it wouldnt really matter how the font is as many people will still buy her album

Ancillary; Mock Up Research; Bruno Mars

Ancillary; Research; Bruno Mars

I downloaded a single from Bruno Mars's new album "Unorthodox Jukebox", called "Locked Out of Heaven". The song peaked number two on the UK charts, after Mars performed it on the popular TV show, The X Factor.

As I was listening to the song, I spotted the album cover for the single (not the album). Its of a woman, wearing a revealing dress and oozes sexual connotations.

The single cover is completely different to the actual album cover (below). The production company purposely chose a revealing picture as the single cover, because they hope to attract more of the male audience; the song also has references to sex, so it makes sense to have a sexual single cover. However, they did not use it for the album cover. Why? Because it will not appeal to the audience as a whole. Mars original audience (from his previous albums) are more like to be from the age range of 18-30 and female, due to the soppy lyrics of love and relationships. If females saw a half naked lady on an album cover, they will know it is not the usual stuff Bruno Mars gets out, and will not purchase the album.

The album cover makes more sense, as it reflects Mars's quirky, cheeky personality. There is a picture of a gorilla and a jukebox; even though they are two completely random things, they are relevant to the album. The jukebox derives from his album name, and the gorilla comes from one the songs from the album.

Ideas

Make the design look, fun and flirty, to attract our fans.
It needs to attract the target audience which in this case it is, 16 and up. The core target audience is 16 till 21. Anyone can listen who likes to listen to pop genres.

Need to add photos of my design work.

Artist inspiring me

I Like the font used , it goes with her theme, which is the princess feel.

Ancillary Product Designs

Group designs: Will now depend on the photographs that we've taken.

Advertisements

This is another way to promote his album by having a party. This is a good way getting more fans involve and giving something back.

Mock ups

This is one of the mock up of my photoshoot. That consists a mid close up of the artist. I may not put this on the front cover but may use this on the back panels. This shot uses a edgey feisty look. The pearls signifies a major role beacause the pearls are the artist individual signiture, individual style.

I used photoshop to make the image big and to crop out the lights. I used the tool bar levels to give a urban twists and to show the genre of the album. I use the effect to lighten the face and brighten the clothing.

Using Photoshop

I know how to use photoshop. I use it in photography.
The picture shown above has been satruated, by using the tools levels, this reinforces the colour either dark or light.

When im doing my digipak, i would want my photograph to be so clear because this is a new artist were bringing into the market for the very first time.

Researching Marina and the Diamonds

One of the posters

This shot i dont like because it looks lazy. I want to attarct my fans not make them think its boring.

I really like this close up, it shows the artist face nice and clear in focus. It has given me several ideas for my digipak.

Artists inspiring for digipak

I like the close up of Adele near the track list.

I love this outrageous picture of lady gaga, it emphahises the wild unique trend she brings to her fans each time. Also her signiture symbol which her fans are familliar to is recogniseable.

I like this one of Lilly Allen, the letter of her name signifies the cover. Showing importance.

This close of Lady Gaga is very interesting, the title of her album is written in her sunglasses a clever idea which i may incoorperate.

I love the urban genre the photography that pixie plays a role with. The name of the album is wrriten. The props and costume plays a big part t the genre. Her fans would realise straight away what the songs would be about.

The Do's and Dont

DO'S - to make a good digipak.

  • Use clear font, should follow the conventions.
  • Use a good appropiate size for images and fonts.
  • Clear photos in focus, shape for the page.
  • Use a good layout.
  • Use the three colour rule.
  • Use appropriate logos, and should be positioned properly: barcodes, date, copyright, title,Artist names and production information.
  • Should be creatve and interesting and NEW.
DON'T - to make a rubbish digipak.
  • Stetch images, or add too many layers on photshop making it too visiable that it has been pixelated.
  • Use layer styles.
  • Use Unessary effects that dosent suit the genre.
  • Use a font because its simply preferable.
  • Seperate pictures on every panel.

Design Ideas

I was inspired by Kate Perrys digipak.
She has the theme of cloud 9 pink candy floss going on.

The digipack includes three colours, baby pink, sky blue, red.
This is consistant which makes it clear and easy to read and have a look.
Theres a vareity of camera shot of photographs of Kate Perry.
The cd print is a design theme from her music video, like sweet doughnuts making it look fun and exciting for fans to enjoy and keep hold of.

We can see that her target audience is young teenagers, beacuse of the fun bright coulours used. Also if we broke it down , we could say girls in particular.
Kate Perry has no clothes on, this portrays her being a sex symbol, to attract her male fans.
She has her track list written in spirals attracting the fans who are picking up the cd.

Importance of a Digipak

Importance of digipaks
The album track list should always appear on the back panel.

Intertextuality is a key feature should be considered, as the image on the front links with the merchandise and other promotional material in order to create familiarity with the audience.

Show a close relationship between the digipak and the target audience

The digipak design should relate to the genre of music.

So I must consider the font , artist name, album name, image and information of artist and producers and record label companies, barcodes.Font Size, lettering.

Image
Design or artwork
Mise en scene
Photograph of the artist
Colours props lighting make up facial expressions

Colour and connotations Theme

Stars and icons
Because its a new artist, a close up should be on the front cover. Well known artist like beyonce, dont need to do that because the target audience is already familliar.

Representations
Good , glamour

Bad guns vilonce not good for younger generation
Be sterotyped, black artists if they show guns, they'd be sterotyped in a bad way from crtics.

Short list of scheme (Ancillary)

For my ancillary i am looking to use 3 main colours which is red which matches with her lipstick and white which is a plain but effective colour and a blue and green colour which could possibly make the digipak and advertisement stand out.

I am looking to included a very colourful scheme which relates with the music video and could help the actual music video stand out.

Analysis Of Digipak ; Florence And the Machine

Florence and the machine has a great way of showing the audience on how she wants to base her theme on. I really like the way she uses the lungs as the main idea of her digipak, she uses the lungs really effectively through the use of her picture. The front of the picture has a picture of lungs outside her body to emphasis the main point of her digipak. In addition to that she has a clear picture of her self which allows the audience to be able to recognise the artist. Furthermore the use of the lungs draws attention to consumers as it catches their eyes and they may want to find out more about how the artist is. This relates to our genre as florence and the machine is an artist which shares similar looks to our character. Overall the digipak is very effective and it has great ideas on the cover.

Ancillary; Making the Mock Up; Using Photoshop.

To make our mock up of our ancillary products, we had a choice to either draw our models or make some images using existing photos from our music video, and edit them on PhotoShop. I chose to PhotoShop as I have some knowledge on it in my previous years of studying Graphics and Photography (and because I suck at drawing, but lets not get in to that!).

This image shows the layers on the ancillary picture; this shows the changes and filters I have put on the picture. Layers 1, 2 and 3 are colour filters in which they change the effect shown on the picture. I change effect style and opacity so it is not a solid colour. You can also see the text layers. I chose two different fonts for the artist name and album name, so you can differentiate from the two so you can recognise the artist as whole, not just when you see her album name. If the artist were to produce more singles and albums, we would use the same font we used for the artist on this album, on the other albums so you recognise the artist and familiarise yourself with their previous albums.

The picture on the left is one of the tools that can be used in Photoshop. The ones highlighted are the ones that I used the most and which made the actual picture. The first highlighted one is the Colour Picker; I picked any colour from any bit within the actual photo, so I have a colour scheme which goes with the album. The colours which were picked out were a mix, so I copied the HTML code so I don't forget the colour scheme.
The next tool I used the most was the Text tool; this is the most obvious important tool to be used for the ancillary product. Without this, the audience will not know the artist name, album name, the tracks within it and the copyright information, which would have caused trouble and confusion for everyone. Unless they are a very known, global singer - like Usher, Calvin Harris, etc - there needs to be something that lets people know who the artist is, to create a opening for them in the market. The concept for this project was to introduce a brand new artist and their video; how can we do this if the audience do not know who the artist is?

The last tool I used the most was for the solid colour layer, and it was the Gradient Filler. I made sure to make a new layer, so I can adjust the layer settings without destroying the actual picture. After I made a new layer and coloured the layer, I adjusted the settings and opacity, which is shown in above right picture. The setting I used the most was Screen and Lighten, as these work best lightening and adding a vintage effect to the picture.

My overall experience making the mock up kind of scared me making the actual product. I had so many ideas, that in the end I didn't know which would look good and what wouldn't. My group also had a problem. We did not have any pictures to use for the ancillary as we had our photo shoot later on, so we had to use stills from the videos we shot and try to work with that. They worked well but it was too pixelated and so it did not look professional; a weakness of editing on the computer. But when we had the photoshoot, we made sure the artist posed in how we wanted her to for our ancillary. Although she was not wearing the right clothing, we worked with we got and in the end produced some really good pictures. I think my mock up will be different to my actual ancillary due to the pictures we took.

Analysis of digipaks ; Katy Perry

Katy Perry digipak
The front of digipaks are usually filled with the artist. This is to promote the star to sell the record and for the audience to feel connected with the song and the star. The digipak grabs the attention of the audiences eyes as it has firstly a clear picture of the singers face, which gives it the idea she is and artist who is trying to get her self out in the media industry. Furthermore the use of her wearing less close also grabs attention as in this day and age audience are intrigued by way the artists are dressed. Also the use of pink is given as a primary colour to establish her personality and the way she is trying to promote her music,it makes the audience aware of the theme she is trying to present. Overall the use of the clouds and pink gives it a 'girly' theme and targets the female audience. This relates to our genre as we have an idea where our artist is a diva character and shows commen interests to katy perry.

Summary on importance of Digipak

In our lesson the teacher explained us why digipaks are essential for a new artist. There are various ways in which an upcoming artist can be presented to the audience so he/she can be recognised. But the two ways in which we were told to get our artist known is by creating a album cover and a magazine advetisement. Digipaks are important as it provides a great way of fans getting access to the artists products. It is basically the main thing which the audience get to find out about the artists music. Here is one example of a digipak:

Summary of class discussion around the importance and function of digipaks to the industry

In class we talked about the importance and functions of digipaks to the music industry and this is what we learnt:

Using good IT skills is a must as the detailing, colour and layout of any work must catch the audiences eye especially if its a digipak as it must sell and be taken of the shelves and has to catch the audiences eye. Both following conventions and clear visual work is very important to as the audience needs to understand what they are seeing and reading and following is as important to in order to produce the best digipak.

The style of  a digipak should be:

3-4 colours max
no more than 2 different fonts
includes elements of graphic design-not simply images lifted from the video
must create some sort of visual link with advertisement

The inside of a digipak should have visual style (font, colour, design) established on the front of the digipak is continued on the inner panels.

A digipak is all about 'adding value' encouraging us to part with our money for something special and 'extra' plays o out love of music.

It should have a modern approach to CD packaging

Allows for inclusion of more information about the band/artist

production information:

Copyright; year of production
web address; record label logo/ name
distributor; producer; possibly price

Promotional Sticker

> Drawing attention to recent tour or special texture

Artists name:

Large, clear font , fore grounded

easy to read; same font for name used throughout digipak

Ancillary; Advertisement one; Britney Spears

Britney Spears - Circus

One main thing which I noticed when looking at this poster is that this poster lacks a picture of Britney, and it lacks a picture of the actual album itself aswell. This is the main way in which Britney's advert differs to to other artists as Britney is very popular and well known, therefore she is trying to sell her album not get herself noticed by the audience. The poster seems to fit in with the 'circus' theme, creating a link between the poster and the album, therefore you would automatically associate the album and poster together. For example, the font is the same style on the album cover and the poster, especially as 'BRITNEY SPEARS' is written bigger than the actual album title on each of these. Another thing I noticed was that the poster includes that the album features "the #1 hit "Womanizer"" which made me decide to base this part of my research on the song which is included on the poster. However, there is not much link between the poster and video.

Ancillary; Digipak three; Britney Spears.

Britney Spears - Circus

This digipak follows the theme of Circus as on the front cover she is sat infront of a light golden curtain. There is a border around the front cover, which is many blue stars which give the idea of glamour and that she is a star, such as in the circus performing for the audience. The fonts are the same as that on the poster, however they do not associate to the fonts on the video. For example, the video is very modern as the fonts are black, silvers and 3D. The colouring is very different as on the digipak the colours are typical colours of the circus such as reds, yellows and gold. One of the only things on this back cover that relates to the circus is the clown who is stood next to the bed as clowns are an often feature of circuses. In terms of the link between the video and the digipak, there is not much as the video all seems very modern and Spears seems very mischievous and independent, whereas on the digipak she seems very innocent and fragile. So even our interpretations of the artist differ between the two texts. We can see that when it comes to lighting for the images, one of the images (front cover) is very lit up, clearly on a set to make her seem more innocent, whereas on the other side the lighting is very dim and dark, especially as the only forms of lighting on this shot is from what seems to be a lamp out of the shot. This could show that there are two different sides to Britney Spears, making some form of synergy between the video and the digipak. One clear thing to notice on the digipak is that there is a barcode on the back, and there are also some symbols which clearly represent the companies which have been involved in the creation of the digipak, music video and CD itself. This will be something that we will need to make sure we put on our own digipak to make sure it is very realistic.

Monday 10 December 2012

Ancillary; Digipak two; Coldplay.

Coldplay - Mylo Xyloto.

The Digipak front cover is the image below. It is a very simple cut out of an M and a X. These are the initials of the album. I think that it is very simple and effective. It targets no specific target audience and is quite confusing. It has a foreign name and a confusing layout. There is something very disjunctive about it when related to the names of their songs, which will be mentioned later.

This is the back of the digipak. Again a strange layout; The typography is really good with the white cut-out font, through that we are able to see the art work behind. There is random writing and graffiti in the background that may give a clue as to what the songs are about or the target audience. There are M’s and X’s all over the wall with lyrics from their songs over it too. The way the lettering over the cover has been placed is really good, for example the OTO on the bottom creates a line of symmetry. The MYL and the OTO are shorter lines to the one on the middle creating a diamond or round shape. The idea of the cover is to get people to observe it closely and evidently, they have achieved this.

The back is literally just covered in graffiti. For the same reasons as the previous picture I think that they are trying to communicate rebellion and freedom in a creative way. Perhaps the song ‘Paradise’ reflects the independence and artistry it wants to convey.

This is the back cover. The same colours are used, and also the typography that is used for the main album title. I really like how the words have been positioned and the composition of the cover. The symbols on the bottom are there that are repeated throughout the albums graffiti. There are also some clearer pictures on the back too. I think the album artwork, works really well together and it flows from one image to the next really easily.
