Research; Laura Mulvey

Laura Mulvey is an feminist who studies in the film field. She has come up with a theory that suggests that music videos are made for peoples satisfaction and that it has representations of women which oppress them (Mulvey's feminist ideas come in here). She calls this the 'Male Gaze'.
The concept of the 'Gaze' is that it deals with how an audience views the people presented. This can be both women looking at men or vice versa. It can also be women looking at other women (stereotypes of women or female 'role models'). As this is Mulvey's theory, we will focus on men looking at women/women looking at women.
The idea of the Male Gaze is that women are presented in music videos/media product to suit their desires or fantasies. In my personal experience, there are a vast amount of boys who love Nicki Minaj for her body! Directors/editors use a technique called Dismembering, which is when the camera solely focuses on particular parts of the body, which supports Mulvey's point.

Nicole Scherzinger's 'Right There' is a perfect example of the 'Male Gaze' and the female role model. For me, when I watched this video all I could stare at was her body and how 'exotic' she looked. Looking through the comments, I see that I was not the only one;

Vernalis Theory

Vernalis had a theory where she concluded that the editing and camera work were used frequently in music videos compared to other filiming elements such as commercials or films.The edits are used in line with the beat so the actual music video stays entertaining to watch.

- Slow motion editing is used to emphasize a piece of mis en scene used or on the artist.
- Frequent use of Jump Cuts/Edits/Transition draw attention.
- Special editing effects used together with disjuncture.
- Camera is never static.
- Continuity editing.
- Structure - Base Track is regularly used.
